Teerawat Akkarach says he only plays Lottery games about once a month, but he couldn't resist purchasing a Powerball ticket last month as the jackpot was swelling.

The Rockville resident crossed over state lines into Virginia, where he headed to Sheetz on Yardley Ridge Road in Sterling to buy some Powerball tickets for the drawing on Monday, Jan. 8, though he took his time checking his numbers.

Akkarach said that he scanned a few tickets on the Virginia Lottery app, then got a surprise when one read that the "prize was greater than $600."

"This is unusual," he mused when collecting his cash. "Maybe we won some money," he thought.

Sure enough, further investigation found that he and his wife had won $50,00 after matching four of the winning numbers and the Powerball, though Akkarach had the foresight to purchase the "Power Play" for an extra dollar, bringing the family's prize to $150,000, though he said he has no immediate plans for his newfound windfall.

“I never get lucky on anything,” he later told Virginia Lottery officials.
